West of Marrakech's old city, the Menara Gardens are among its most iconic landmarks. This vast expanse of olive groves offers a peaceful retreat and striking mountain views.
Almohad origins
The gardens date back to the 12th century Almohad dynasty. At their heart lies a large reservoir, historically fed by khettaras, underground tunnels that irrigated the surrounding olive groves.
The green-roofed pavilion
In the 19th century, an Alaouite sultan built the elegant pavilion with its green tiled roof, mirrored in the still water, with the snow-capped Atlas Mountains rising behind on clear days.
Walking the groves is free or low-cost; a small fee grants access to the pavilion terrace. From Riad Dar Kawkawa, it's about 15-20 minutes by petit taxi. Sunset is the best time to visit.
