About 30 to 40 minutes' drive south of Marrakech, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, Lake Lalla Takerkoust is one of the most popular day trips for travellers staying in the medina. Visitors come for two very different thrills: riding a quad bike across rocky trails and palm groves, and cooling off on the water with jet-skiing or a boat ride, with sweeping Atlas Mountain views.

What a typical half-day looks like

Most excursions run as a half-day trip, either morning or afternoon. A vehicle picks you up in Marrakech and drives you out to the starting point, roughly 30 to 40 minutes away. The quad route winds through dirt tracks, palm oases and small Berber villages. The water activities come next: jet-skiing, boat rides or paddleboarding on the lake's turquoise waters. Some packages include a tea break or a Berber lunch.

What to bring

Wear comfortable, light clothing, plus closed shoes for the quad ride. Bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to jet-ski. Don't forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a small bottle of water. Quad helmets are usually provided on site.
