The medina of Marrakech is a vast maze of narrow alleyways, many far too tight for a car. The final stretch of your journey to your riad is always on foot. Wooden hand-carts, pushed by local porters, can carry your bags right to your door for a small tip. Exploring the medina on foot
Walking is by far the best way to discover the medina, and often the only way. The souks and side alleys can only be explored on foot. For longer trips outside the old city walls, you have several options.
Petit taxis, calèches, bikes and mopeds
To reach Gueliz or the airport, the petit taxi (usually beige) is the most practical — agree on a price before getting in. The calèche is a pleasant tourist option for a scenic ride. Bicycles and mopeds are widely used by locals.
Finding your way in the medina
Your best landmark is the Koutoubia minaret, visible from many points. Always keep your riad's address handy, and don't hesitate to ask for directions — locals are generally very welcoming.
