What is Gnaoua music?

Rooted in sub-Saharan African heritage, played on the guembri (three-string bass lute) and qraqebs (iron castanets), traditionally tied to the lila spiritual healing ceremony. On Jemaa el-Fna, musicians play every evening.

Festivals worth knowing

The Gnaoua World Music Festival in Essaouira (June, 2.5h drive) draws hundreds of thousands. Marrakech has its own Popular Arts Festival at El Badi Palace. Riad Dar Kawkawa, 3 min from Jemaa el-Fna, puts you at the heart of it.
