Wandering through Marrakech's medina souks without falling for a Berber rug is nearly impossible. These handwoven pieces, made by Amazigh women, each carry the story of a village or tribe. But telling an authentic piece from a mass-produced copy isn't always obvious to an untrained eye. Here's what to look for before you buy.
The Three Main Styles
Beni Ourain rugs, from the Middle Atlas, are known for their thick cream wool and bold black geometric diamond patterns — the most internationally sought-after style. Azilal rugs, woven in the High Atlas, feature colorful abstract designs on a natural wool base, often lighter and more graphic. Boucherouite rugs skip wool altogether, woven instead from recycled fabric and clothing scraps into vivid, playful, one-of-a-kind pieces.
To judge quality, always flip the rug over. Genuine hand-knotted wool shows slight irregularities in the weave and a pile that isn't perfectly even — that's actually a good sign of authenticity, unlike a machine-made rug that looks too flawless. Smell and feel the wool: real wool has a faint animal scent and slightly oily texture, while synthetic fibers feel cold and odorless. Check the knot density on the back too — the tighter and finer the knots, the more valuable the piece.
Dyes, Prices, and Negotiating
Look closely at the dye as well. Natural dyes (plant-based, indigo, henna) fade unevenly over time, often beautifully so, while chemical dyes stay uniformly bright — sometimes garishly so — for years. Prices vary hugely depending on size, age, and rarity of pattern: expect roughly 800 to 2000 MAD for a small Boucherouite, and considerably more for a large, older Beni Ourain.
Negotiating is part of the experience: dealers expect genuine back-and-forth, so don't hesitate to haggle and compare prices across several shops before committing. Finally, think about transport — most rugs can be vacuum-packed to fit easily into luggage, and many shops offer international shipping for larger pieces.
