Among the essential landmarks of the medina, the Saadian Tombs hold a unique place. Hidden for centuries, this royal necropolis is an easy walk from Riad Dar Kawkawa.
A history of secrecy and respect
Built in the late 16th century by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur as a royal necropolis, when the Alaouite dynasty rose to power, Sultan Moulay Ismail had the entrance walled up out of respect for the dead. The tombs remained forgotten until rediscovered in 1917 via aerial photography.
What to see
The Chamber of the Twelve Columns, built with Carrara marble and topped by a carved cedar dome, is the highlight. A peaceful garden holds smaller graves.
As the site is small, arrive at opening to avoid queues. Allow 30-45 minutes. It's located next to the Kasbah Mosque.
